How Much Fabric Do You Need to Reupholster a Chair?

Chair Upholstery Yardage Depends on Construction
A dining-chair seat pad and a fully upholstered wingback are both chairs, but their fabric requirements are not comparable. A useful estimate needs to know which surfaces are upholstered and how the cover is built.

How the Chair Fabric Calculator Works
For fully upholstered chairs, the calculator models the furniture as a collection of rectangular cutting envelopes. Depending on the selected type, these can include outside back, inside back, seat deck, front rail, inside arms, outside arms, arm fronts, wings, seat cushion faces and boxing, back cushion pieces, footrest panels and skirt fabric.
The envelopes are then placed across the entered usable fabric width. This matters because upholstery yardage is a layout problem: two pieces with the same total area can consume different running yardage when one is too wide to sit beside another.
Worked Example: 32-Inch Armchair
The default model is a 32 × 34 × 38-inch armchair with a 21 × 21-inch inside seat, tight upholstered back, one 4-inch loose seat cushion, track arms and 54-inch usable fabric.
With 2 inches of frame cut/tuck allowance, 1/2-inch cushion seams, no pattern repeat, rotation allowed, a 5% self-fabric welt planning allowance and 10% cutting/error allowance, the validated layout recommends 7 yards after quarter-yard rounding.

Dining Chair Seat Fabric Formula
A drop-in or wrapped dining-chair seat is different from a sewn box cushion. The fabric must cover the seat surface and continue around the pad far enough to staple or secure underneath.
Seat cut width = seat width + (2 × wrap allowance)
Seat cut depth = seat depth + (2 × wrap allowance)
For example, an 18 × 18-inch seat with a 3-inch wrap allowance needs a 24 × 24-inch cutting envelope before pattern matching. Multiple chair seats are then packed across the selected fabric width instead of multiplying one-chair yardage blindly.
Dining Chair Seat and Back
When the back is upholstered too, the calculator adds a front and outside-back envelope using the entered seat width as the back width reference and the entered upholstered-back height. The same wrap allowance is used around those back panels. If the back is tufted, the selected tufting extra increases the planning depth.
Parsons chairs add a modeled back-edge or side-wrap strip because the back is usually more fully upholstered than a simple removable pad.
Loose Chair Cushion Fabric
For a loose armchair seat cushion, the model includes a top face, a bottom face and a continuous boxing envelope. Cushion face cut sizes include the selected seam allowance.
Seat cushion face width = inside seat width + (2 × seam allowance)
Seat cushion face depth = inside seat depth + (2 × seam allowance)
Boxing cut height = finished cushion thickness + (2 × seam allowance)

Wingback Chair Fabric
The wingback model starts with the armchair body and adds separate inside and outside wing envelopes on both sides. The wing pieces are modeled from the difference between overall and inside width plus the back height. Real wing shapes are curved, so the calculator treats these as cutting envelopes rather than finished patterns.
Barrel and Tub Chair Fabric
A barrel chair has a curved body rather than a flat rectangular back. The calculator increases the modeled inside- and outside-back widths to reserve additional cloth for that curve, then includes the seat and arm/body pieces. Deep channeling, pleats or a strongly shaped shell can require more than a dimension-only model can predict.
Recliner Fabric Estimates Need Extra Caution
Recliners vary significantly because the footrest, moving sides, back and mechanism covers can be built in many ways. The recliner option adds modeled footrest faces and moving side-cover envelopes to the upholstered chair body, but it should be treated as an early planning estimate. If the original cover can be removed and measured, that is a better source for a final cut order.
Pattern Repeat and Chair Upholstery
Pattern matching can increase chair fabric use even when the chair is small. A visible motif may need to be centered on the back, seat and arm fronts, and matching points can push a cut to the next pattern repeat.
Enter both vertical and horizontal repeats when known. The calculator expands each modeled envelope to the next repeat boundary. This reserves matching space but does not decide exactly where a flower, stripe or medallion should sit on the finished chair.
Nap, Velvet and One-Way Chair Fabric
Velvet, chenille with visible direction, one-way prints and some textured fabrics may require consistent orientation. Selecting nap / one-way motif prevents 90-degree rotation in the modeled layout. That can increase running yardage and can also force a wide back panel to be pieced.
What Happens When a Chair Panel Is Wider Than the Fabric?
If a modeled back or body envelope cannot fit the usable fabric width in any permitted orientation, the calculator can split it into multiple fabric-width panels. The selected panel seam allowance is added to the joined edges, and the result reports the number of modeled seams.
Actual seam location should be chosen for appearance and construction. On patterned fabric, the seam may need additional matching room beyond the mathematical split.

Does a wingback chair need more fabric than a basic armchair?

Does pattern repeat increase chair yardage?

Why can velvet require more chair fabric?
