Fabric Width Means the Usable Width Across the Bolt
Fabric width is measured across the cloth from one side to the other. For project math, the most useful number is the usable width: the portion you can actually cut after excluding selvage, coated edges, damaged edge material or any area you do not plan to use.
Nominal bolt width and usable width are not always identical. When a calculator asks for usable width, enter the width available for real cut pieces.
Common Fabric Widths
The ranges below are practical reference points, not universal manufacturing standards. Always use the width printed on the specific fabric or measure the cloth you have.

Nominal Width vs. Usable Width
A 44-inch quilting cotton may not provide 44 full inches of usable printed fabric. If you exclude 1 inch in total for selvages and edge variation, the usable width becomes 43 inches.
Usable width = nominal width − excluded edge width
That small difference can change strip count, panel count or yardage when a layout sits close to a width threshold.
How Much Area Is in One Running Yard?
A running yard is always 36 inches long, but its square area changes with fabric width.
Square yards in one running yard = fabric width in inches ÷ 36

Why Width Changes Yardage
Fabric is bought by running length, not by total square area alone. A wider cloth can place more pieces side by side or reduce the number of full curtain drops. That is why project calculators ask for fabric width even when the finished project dimensions stay the same.

Should I enter nominal width or usable width in a calculator?
Use usable width whenever the tool asks for it. Exclude selvages or any edge material you will not cut into the project.
Does wider fabric always mean fewer yards?
No. Wider fabric helps only when it changes the actual layout, such as fitting another piece across the width or reducing the number of curtain drops or upholstery panels.
Why is 54-inch fabric common in upholstery calculations?
Many decorator and upholstery fabrics are sold around that width, so it is a useful planning reference. The actual cloth may differ, and the measured usable width should control the final calculation.
