Cushion dimensions Use the finished cover dimensions. The foam reference below uses the same nominal size unless your foam supplier or construction method specifies otherwise.
Zipper and piping The back zipper plaque replaces the rear boxing section. Piping length is calculated from the finished plate perimeter.
Fabric and pattern Use the actual cutting width after excluding selvages. Pattern-repeat inputs conservatively expand each cutting envelope to a repeat boundary.

Boxing construction

Choose continuous boxing or four separately seamed sides, with an optional back zipper plaque.

Calculate cording length, zipper opening and optional straight-cut self-fabric piping strips.

Real fabric layout

Place rectangular cut envelopes within usable fabric width instead of relying on fabric area alone.

How Do You Calculate Fabric for a Box Cushion?

Use this box cushion calculator to build a rectangular cushion from two plates and separate boxing. Enter finished length, width and thickness, then choose continuous or separately seamed boxing. The result gives the top and bottom cut sizes, boxing dimensions, zipper plaque, piping length, foam reference, cut list and fabric yardage.

Unlike a simple fabric-area calculation, the yardage estimate places rectangular cut envelopes inside the usable fabric width. It can also account for directional fabric, vertical and horizontal pattern repeat, multiple cushions and straight-cut self-fabric piping strips.

Box Cushion Cut-Size Formulas

A traditional box cushion has a top plate, a bottom plate and a boxing section around the outside edge. If the finished cushion dimensions are length L, width W, thickness T and seam allowance SA:

Plate cut length = L + (2 × SA)

Plate cut width = W + (2 × SA)

Boxing cut height = T + (2 × SA)

These cut dimensions include seam allowance on every sewn edge. The calculator keeps the finished cushion size visible separately so you do not have to remember whether a number is finished or cut.

Continuous Boxing vs. Four Seamed Sides

ConstructionBoxing piecesMain advantageWhat the calculator does
Continuous boxingOne long boxing strip plus optional back zipper plaqueFewer corner seams in the boxingUses one strip around the front and sides when a back plaque is selected, or one full perimeter loop without a plaque
Four seamed sidesFront, back and two side stripsIndividual sides are easier to pattern, replace or seam separatelyCreates separate cut pieces; when a zipper plaque is used, it replaces the back boxing strip

Continuous Boxing Length

Without a separate zipper plaque, the finished boxing loop follows the complete cushion perimeter:

Finished boxing perimeter = 2 × (L + W)

The continuous strip also needs seam allowance at the closing seam.

When a back zipper plaque replaces the rear side, the continuous boxing runs across the front and both sides:

Front-and-side boxing length = L + (2 × W)

How the Back Zipper Plaque Is Calculated

The zipper-plaque option creates two long strips for the back of the cushion. Their combined cut width starts with the normal boxing cut height and adds the adjustable plaque extra width. That extra gives room for installing the zipper before the assembled plaque is trimmed back to the intended boxing cut height.

Combined plaque cut width = boxing cut height + plaque extra

Each plaque-half cut width = combined plaque cut width ÷ 2

The zipper opening itself is calculated from cushion length minus the selected setback at each end. Extra zipper chain is then added so the slider and stops can be handled outside the final opening.

Construction methods differ, so both plaque extra and zipper setback are editable rather than being treated as universal constants.

Piping or Welt Length for a Box Cushion

Piping usually follows the perimeter of a plate. The calculator can plan piping around the top only or around both top and bottom plates.

One piping run = 2 × (L + W) + joining extra

When top and bottom are both piped, multiply that length by two. If you are using ready-made piping, the calculator reports the cording length without changing fabric yardage.

If you choose straight WOF self-fabric strips, the calculator also works out how many strips are needed after allowing for diagonal strip joins and adds those full-width strips to the fabric layout. For bias-cut piping, use the Bias Binding Calculator to size the bias source separately.

Worked Example: 24 × 24 × 4-Inch Box Cushion

For a 24 × 24 × 4-inch finished cushion with a 1/2-inch seam allowance:

  • Top plate: 25 × 25 inches
  • Bottom plate: 25 × 25 inches
  • Boxing cut height: 5 inches
  • Continuous front-and-side boxing with a back plaque: 5 × 73 inches
  • Two zipper-plaque halves with 1 inch of plaque extra: 3 × 25 inches each

With 54-inch usable non-directional fabric and no pattern repeat, the calculator can place the long boxing strip beside other cushion pieces rather than simply adding each piece’s length. With the default 10% cutting allowance and quarter-yard rounding, the validated default layout recommends 2.25 yards of face fabric when piping fabric is not added.

Why Fabric Area Alone Can Be Wrong

Two projects with the same total square inches of fabric can require different running yardage. A 25-inch plate may fit twice across 54-inch fabric, while a long 5-inch boxing strip may run beside other pieces for much of the roll length. Fabric width, piece orientation and pattern direction decide how efficiently those shapes can be nested.

The calculator therefore uses a rectangular placement model inside the selected usable fabric width. It shows the resulting cutting envelope so you can see why a project uses a particular running length.

Directional Fabric and Pattern Repeat

Select directional or nap fabric when plates and boxing must remain in a consistent orientation. This disables 90-degree rotation in the cutting layout.

For pattern matching, vertical and horizontal repeat values conservatively enlarge each rectangular layout envelope to the next repeat boundary. The physical cut dimensions in the cut list stay unchanged. This approach reserves matching room without pretending that every print can be nested as tightly as a solid fabric.

Foam Size for a Box Cushion

The calculator shows a nominal foam-core reference equal to the entered finished cushion length, width and thickness. Actual foam sizing can vary with foam density, batting or fiber wrap, desired crown, compression and the cover-construction method. Use the foam dimensions required by your upholstery method or foam supplier rather than automatically adding or subtracting a fixed amount.

Box Cushion Calculator FAQ

What pieces do I cut for a box cushion?

A standard separate-boxing cushion uses a top plate, a bottom plate and boxing around the perimeter. The boxing can be one continuous strip or separate side strips. A zipper closure can replace the back boxing section with a two-piece zipper plaque.

How do I calculate the top and bottom cushion panels?

Add seam allowance to both ends of each dimension. With a 1/2-inch seam allowance, a 24 × 24-inch finished plate is cut 25 × 25 inches.

How wide should box cushion boxing be?

The finished boxing equals the finished cushion thickness. Add seam allowance to both long edges for the cut height. A 4-inch finished boxing with 1/2-inch seams is cut 5 inches high.

How long should a continuous boxing strip be?

For a full loop, start with twice the cushion length plus twice the width, then add seam allowance for the closing seam. If a separate back zipper plaque is used, the continuous strip can cover the front and two sides instead.

How much piping do I need for a box cushion?

One piping run equals the finished plate perimeter plus joining extra. Double that amount when both top and bottom plates are piped.

Does the fabric yardage include piping?

Only when you select straight WOF self-fabric piping strips. If cording-only is selected, piping length is reported as a separate material and is not added to face-fabric yardage.

Can the calculator handle patterned upholstery fabric?

Yes. Enter vertical and horizontal repeat values to reserve conservative matching envelopes. Select directional or nap fabric when pieces should not rotate in the layout.

Does the calculator automatically oversize the foam?

No. It shows the entered finished cushion dimensions as a foam reference. Foam fit depends on material, wrap, compression and construction, so use the sizing method appropriate to your project.
