What Does a Fabric Weight Calculator Measure?

A fabric weight calculator works with mass per unit area, most commonly GSM in grams per square meter or oz/yd² in ounces per square yard. Those values describe how much a fixed area of cloth weighs, so they can be compared even when two fabrics come in different bolt widths.

This tool can also calculate the total mass of a piece or roll, estimate GSM from a weighed rectangular sample, show weight per running yard or meter, and reverse the math to estimate roll length from net fabric weight.

GSM vs. Ounces per Square Yard

GSM means grams per square meter. oz/yd² means ounces per square yard. Both are areal-weight measurements: they describe mass divided by area rather than mass per running yard.

The conversion factor is:

1 oz/yd² = 33.9057 GSM

So the two basic conversions are:

Areal Weight Is Not the Same as Linear-Yard Weight

This distinction matters when shopping in the United States. A specification such as 8 oz/yd² means that one square yard of the material weighs 8 ounces. It does not automatically mean that one running yard from the bolt weighs 8 ounces.

A running yard has the full fabric width, so its area depends on that width. For a fabric that is 54 inches wide, one running yard covers 1.5 square yards. At 8 oz/yd², that running yard weighs 12 ounces.

oz per linear yard = oz/yd² × fabric width in yards

Worked Example: 200 GSM Fabric at 54 Inches Wide

The default conversion example uses 200 GSM fabric at 54 inches wide. Two hundred GSM converts to approximately 5.899 oz/yd².

A 54-inch width is 1.3716 meters. At 200 g/m², one running meter weighs:

200 × 1.3716 = 274.32 grams per linear meter

One running yard is 0.9144 meter long, so the same fabric weighs approximately 250.84 grams or 8.848 ounces per linear yard.

How to Calculate Total Fabric Weight

To calculate the total mass of a known piece or roll, first calculate its area in square meters and then multiply by GSM.

Fabric area (m²) = width (m) × length (m)

Total fabric weight (g) = area (m²) × GSM

For example, 3 running yards of 54-inch-wide fabric have an area of about 3.763 square meters. At 200 GSM, the fabric weighs about 752.5 grams, 26.54 ounces or 1.659 pounds.

How to Calculate GSM from a Fabric Sample

If the supplier does not provide GSM, weigh a rectangular sample whose dimensions you know. Convert the sample area to square meters and the sample mass to grams.

GSM = sample weight in grams ÷ sample area in square meters

A 10 × 10 cm sample covers 0.01 m². If it weighs 2 grams:

2 g ÷ 0.01 m² = 200 GSM

For a more representative estimate, use a clean, flat sample and an accurate scale. A tiny dimensional or weight error has a larger effect when the sample is very small.

Calculate Roll Length from Fabric Weight

If a roll has a known net fabric mass, known width and known GSM, the total running length can be estimated by reversing the total-weight formula.

Grams per linear meter = GSM × fabric width in meters

Roll length (m) = net fabric weight (g) ÷ grams per linear meter

For a 10 kg net roll of 200 GSM fabric at 54 inches wide, the estimated length is about 36.45 meters or 39.87 yards.

Do not include the weight of the cardboard tube, shipping wrap, end caps or other packaging in the net fabric weight.

Fabric Weight and Fabric Width Answer Different Questions

GSM and oz/yd² stay the same when the same material is supplied at a different bolt width. The weight of a running yard, however, changes because a wider running yard contains more square area.

Fabric Weight Is Not Fabric Thickness

Two fabrics can have similar GSM values and still feel very different. Fiber type, yarn size, weave or knit structure, brushing, coating, pile, compression and finishing all affect thickness, loft, drape and hand. Treat GSM as a mass-per-area specification, not as a direct thickness measurement.

What is GSM in fabric?

GSM means grams per square meter. It tells you the mass of one square meter of the material and allows fabrics of different widths to be compared on the same area basis.

How do I convert GSM to oz/yd²?

Divide GSM by approximately 33.9057. For example, 200 GSM is about 5.899 oz/yd².

How do I convert oz/yd² to GSM?

Multiply ounces per square yard by approximately 33.9057. For example, 8 oz/yd² is about 271.25 GSM.

Is oz/yd² the same as ounces per linear yard?

No. oz/yd² is weight per square yard. Weight per running yard depends on the fabric width. A wider running yard contains more square area and therefore weighs more.

How can I find fabric GSM without a GSM cutter?

Measure a rectangular sample accurately, weigh it in grams and divide the weight by the sample area in square meters. The Sample → GSM mode performs the unit conversions for you.

Can I calculate shipping weight for fabric?

The Piece / Roll Weight mode estimates net fabric mass. Actual shipment weight can be higher because the tube, packaging, labels and other materials are not part of the fabric GSM calculation.

Can fabric weight tell me how thick the fabric is?

Not directly. GSM measures mass per area. Thickness also depends on fiber, yarn, construction, pile, coating, finishing and compression.

Why does linear-yard weight change when fabric width changes?

A running yard is always one yard long, but its square area increases with bolt width. The same 200 GSM fabric therefore weighs more per running yard at 60 inches wide than at 45 inches wide.
