How Do You Calculate Drapery Width?

Use this drapery calculator to size the finished treatment before calculating fabric yardage. Enter the installed rod or track face width, left and right returns, center overlap and fullness. The calculator returns finished treatment width, finished width per panel and the flat heading width needed before pleating or gathering.

Drapery Finished Width Formula

For a functional treatment on an installed rod or track, the drapery often needs to cover more than the face width. Returns wrap from the rod face toward the wall, and a center-draw pair can include an overlap where the leading edges meet.

Finished treatment width = rod face width + left return + right return + center overlap

For a balanced center-split pair, the calculator divides the rod face and total overlap evenly while assigning the left return to the left panel and the right return to the right panel.

Drapery Fullness Formula

Fullness describes how much flat fabric is compressed into a finished drapery width.

Flat heading width = finished treatment width × fullness ratio

Fullness ratio = flat heading width ÷ finished treatment width

Heading style, fabric weight, track system and the look you want can all change the appropriate ratio. The presets are practical starting points, not fixed rules for every workroom or hardware system.

Confirm the final ratio with the heading system. Ripple carriers, pleat styles, fabric bulk and workroom standards can require a specific fullness rather than a generic preset.

Worked Drapery Example: 72-Inch Rod

Suppose the installed rod face is 72 inches wide with 3.5-inch returns at both ends and 5 inches of total center overlap.

Finished treatment width = 72 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 5 = 84 inches.

For a balanced center-split pair, the left and right panels each finish at 42 inches. At 2.5× fullness, each panel needs about 105 inches of flat heading width, or 210 inches total before fabric-width and side-hem calculations.

How to Calculate Pleat Spacing

Pleat Layout is designed for a single panel after the workroom has established the flat heading width and target finished panel width. It keeps the leading edge and return as fixed sections and distributes the remaining finished center span between the pleats.

If there are N pleats, there are N − 1 visible spaces between them in this layout model.

Visible center span = finished panel width − leading edge − return

Space between pleats = visible center span ÷ (number of pleats − 1)

Total pleat take-up = flat panel width − finished panel width

Take-up per pleat = total pleat take-up ÷ number of pleats

Pleat Layout Example

A panel has 108 inches of flat heading width and must finish at 42 inches. Reserve 2.5 inches for the leading edge and 3.5 inches for the return, then use 10 pleats.

The visible center span is 36 inches. Ten pleats create nine spaces, so the spacing is 4 inches. The panel loses 66 inches into pleat take-up, or 6.6 inches of fabric take-up per pleat. This is the fabric consumed by the pleat, not necessarily the visible folded width at the top of the finished pleat.

Stackback and Rod Width

Stackback is the space occupied by drapery when it is drawn open. If the goal is to clear the glass, the installed rod or track often extends beyond the window opening so the stacked treatment has somewhere to sit.

The calculator includes an optional stackback comparison using 25%, about one-third or 40% of the opening width, plus a custom percentage. Treat this as a planning reference only. Real stackback changes with fabric thickness, lining, fullness, pleat depth, number of carriers, rod system and treatment length.

Total extension outside opening = rod face width − window opening width

For a center-draw treatment, that extension is commonly shared between the two sides when the rod is centered over the opening.

Why Finished Drapery Width Is Not the Same as Flat Fabric Width

A pleated drapery that finishes 42 inches wide can begin with well over 42 inches of flat fabric. The difference is taken into pleats or folds. This distinction is why ordering panels by a finished width without knowing the heading style can produce too little or too much fabric.

The sizing calculator intentionally stops at flat heading width. Once that workroom dimension is known, move to the fabric-specific calculator to account for bolt width, joined seams, side hems, top and bottom allowances, pattern matching and lining.

How do I calculate finished drapery width?

Add the installed rod or track face width, the left return, the right return and any total center overlap. For a balanced center pair, split that total into the two finished panels.

What is drapery fullness?

Fullness is the ratio between flat heading width and finished treatment width. A 2.5× fullness ratio means 100 inches of finished coverage uses about 250 inches of flat heading width before other fabric allowances.

How much overlap should center-draw drapes have?

Overlap depends on the traverse hardware and workroom specification. Enter the total overlap required by your system instead of assuming one fixed value for every rod.

What is a drapery return?

A return is the finished section that travels from the face of the rod or track toward the wall at the outside edge. Hardware projection and workroom construction determine the appropriate return.

How do I calculate pleat spacing?

In the calculator’s balanced layout, subtract the fixed leading edge and return from finished panel width. Divide that visible center span by one fewer than the number of pleats.

How do I calculate fabric take-up per pleat?

Subtract finished panel width from flat panel width to get total pleat take-up, then divide by the number of pleats. Make a sample pleat before final marking because pleat construction affects the physical folded shape.

How much rod extension do I need for stackback?

There is no universal percentage because stack depends on fabric, fullness, heading and hardware. The calculator can compare your installed extension with a configurable planning ratio, but hardware or workroom specifications should control the final decision.
