Quick Upholstery Fabric Estimates
These are useful starting ranges for approximately 54-inch-wide plain upholstery fabric. They are deliberately shown as ranges because arm size, cushion construction, outside backs, decks, skirts and hidden attachment areas vary even when two pieces have similar overall dimensions.

These ranges are not cut lists. If the fabric is expensive, directional, hard to reorder or has a large motif, measure the real upholstery panels before placing the final order.
Why Overall Furniture Dimensions Are Not Enough for an Exact Yardage
Upholstery is not one rectangular cover. A sofa can include an inside back, outside back, deck, front rail, inside arms, outside arms, seat cushions, boxing, zipper panels, facings, welt strips and hidden tuck-in areas. Overall width, depth and height cannot tell the calculator exactly how those pieces are divided.
That is why the quick mode returns a modeled range instead of pretending there is one exact number. It scales a furniture-type baseline to the entered dimensions, then adjusts the range for fabric width, repeat, direction, loose cushions and selected construction details.
Measured Panels: A Better Way to Estimate Upholstery Yardage
If the old cover is available, label the pieces as you remove them and measure the finished panel envelopes. Enter each panel width, length and quantity in Measured Panels. Add the cut/tuck allowance you want around every edge. The calculator expands the pieces, applies repeat rounding and packs them across the usable fabric width.
This method is especially useful when you already know the inside back, outside back, deck, arms and cushion pieces but do not want to manually work out how many cutting rows they need.
How the Measured-Panel Layout Works
Each cutting piece begins with the entered panel dimensions. The calculator adds the allowance to both sides of the width and both ends of the length.
Cut width = panel width + (2 × allowance)
Cut length = panel length + (2 × allowance)
If a vertical or horizontal repeat is entered, the cutting envelope is rounded upward to the next repeat interval. Pieces are then placed in cutting rows across the usable fabric width. When the fabric is non-directional, pieces marked Rotate may turn 90 degrees if that reduces the roll length. Nap / one-way direction disables that rotation.
Use Usable Fabric Width, Not the Bolt Label
Most upholstery fabric is around 54 inches wide, but the full printed or woven width is not always usable. Selvages, coated edges or damaged sections may reduce the working width. Enter the width you are actually willing to cut from because even a small difference can change how many panels fit beside each other.
Pattern Repeat and Upholstery Fabric Yardage
A pattern repeat creates matching waste. A visible floral, plaid, stripe or medallion may need to begin at a similar motif position on seat cushions, fronts, backs or arms. In Quick Furniture Estimate, repeat size increases the planning factor. In Measured Panels, the entered vertical and horizontal repeats enlarge the rectangular cutting envelope before the pieces are packed.
Pattern matching is still a visual decision. A calculator can allow extra fabric for a repeat, but it cannot know which flower or medallion you want centered on a chair back. For a dominant motif, plan the most visible panels on the actual fabric before cutting.
Nap, Velvet and One-Way Upholstery Fabric
Velvet, chenille and fabrics with an obvious directional design often need every visible panel to run the same way. That removes many of the rotations that make a plain-fabric layout efficient. Select Nap / one-way direction so the calculator treats rotation more conservatively.
Skirts, Deep Tufting and Self-Fabric Welt
The quick mode can add planning room for three details that commonly increase yardage. A skirt adds long perimeter pieces. Deep tufting needs additional surface fabric to travel into folds or channels. Self-fabric welt requires narrow strips that can consume meaningful yardage on a large sofa. For a final measured calculation, enter those pieces directly when you know their dimensions.
Worked Example: 84-Inch 3-Seat Sofa
Start with a standard 3-seat sofa measuring about 84 inches wide, 38 inches deep and 36 inches high, with three loose seat cushions and three loose back cushions. With approximately 54-inch plain fabric, no skirt, no extra tufting and no directional restriction, the calculator begins from the 3-seat-sofa planning range and keeps the dimension scale near the reference size.
If you switch to narrower fabric, add a large repeat, use velvet or add a skirt, the recommended high-end purchase moves upward. For the strongest result, measure the sofa cover pieces and run the Measured Panels method before ordering.
